Suppose we listen to every lecture Swami Vivekananda ever gave. Suppose we read his biography and learn all the details of his life. Will we be able to conclude that he was an Avatar of Shiva?
We will not! Based on this external analysis performed by our outer mind, we will find it impossible to draw such a conclusion. Then how is the knowledge of Swami Vivekananda’s cosmic stature attained?
This higher knowledge is obtained only when the inner sight opens. As the spiritual experiences of Swami Vivekananda’s brother-disciples show, only the inner eye can grasp the subtle cosmic realities such as Swami Vivekananda being an Avatar of Shiva.
In Vedanta there are 2 types of knowledge:
- Apara – Lower knowledge gathered through physical senses and brain. All sciences fall in this category.
- Para – Higher Divine knowledge that is gathered only through spiritual experiences. It is the subtle higher mind (vigyanmay kosha) and our consciousness that perceives these realities. Perception of Swami Vivekananda being an Avatar of Shiva falls in this category.
