“Man must conquer this illusion, and know that the dead are here beside us and with us, as much as ever. It is their absence and separation that are a myth.”

Book Summary – Notes of Some Wanderings With Swami Vivekananda

Wanderings with Swami Vivekananda, is a little book, that was formulated out of a series of essays, penned by Sister Nivedita, which first appeared in the Brahmavadin – a publication of the Ramakrishna Mission.

The book narrates Sister Nivedita’s journey across the Himalayas, visiting historical monuments and shrines, while accompanying her guru Swami Vivekananda.

The contents of this book, cover much the same grounds as the first few chapters of Nivedita’s other writing, The Master as I Saw Him. Therefore this work can be read as a supplement to that book, should a reader wish to gain additional insights.

The text itself has been compiled in an easy to read fashion, such that any chapter can be opened and read without losing any continuity.

Like her other book, this book too comes with a slight drawback – in that Sister Nivedita, perhaps out of immense humility, jumps from writing in the first person to the third person, whenever she wishes to recount certain significant spiritual moments between herself and Swami Vivekananda. This makes for a confusing read. In order to remedy this situation, the “Quick Download version”, has been annotated with footnotes which point out these instances, as well as provide additional background to enhance understanding.

Like its predecessor (The Master as I Saw Him), this book too, is geared towards a Vivekananda enthusiast, who wishes to gather more snippets from the life of this illustrious teacher. Another most valuable book to read, for this purpose is “Reminiscences of Swami Vivekananda” by his Eastern and Western admirers.
